“The Church In Markinch”

This recent book is much more than just the history of Markinch Church. It gives an excellent background to the local area covering the past 6000 years.

The text covers 177 pages including 45 black and white illustrations with an additional 8 pages of colour photographs.

The book was researched and written by Ian Gourlay.

Most of the photographs were taken by Ken Wilkie.

Introduction by the author, Ian Gourlay.

A brief history of Markinch and the surrounding area. Details of local landmarks and places of interest; local industries and family seats,

A history of the church in Markinch over the past 1500 years, including how it was affected by The Reformation; the part played by local Covenanters and the Disruption. Details of cases appearing before the Kirk Session [the magistrates of the period] are incorporated.

A list of ministers in the Established Church since the late 1560s.

Buildings: Full details of the church [dating from 1780] and tower [dating from 1180] with photographs of the houses which surrounded the churchyard until the 1930's.

Family historians will be interested in the section headed graveyard, which includes a list of the surnames of over 4000 people buried in the churchyard. You will be able to check to see if you have relatives there.

People of interest relates to people who have contributed to the social history of Markinch. The Balfours of Balbirnie; the Ballingalls of Sweetbank; General Sir Alexander Leslie; William Haxton and Rev. Andrew Thomson.

The names on the memorial plaques relating to the Two World Wars are listed for the benefit of family historians.

Finally, there is a miscellaneous section with interesting and humorous anecdotes about Church Officers from days long gone up to the present; a connection with the National Bard, Robert Burns; the Communion Silver; Past and present Kirk Sessions are listed and parts of the Statistical Accounts of 1792, 1840 and 1949 relating to the church are quoted.
