Markinch’s fallen servicemen and women and those serving in current conflicts were remembered and honoured in a moving services on Remembrance Sunday.
The fresh grey morning saw the area surrounding Markinch’s war memorial filled with more than two hundred solemn participants – some in uniform and some plain-clothed. This emotional service and two minutes’ silence was led by the parish minister the Revd. Alex Forsyth, pipers Hayley & Warren Gibson and an ensemble from Tullis Russell Mills Band.
After paying tribute to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice the minister invited the Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Mr Robert Balfour, to place the first wreath on the war memorial.
Community Wreath Laying followed, with local organisations including, the Territorial Army, the Royal British Legion, Markinch Primary School, Co-op Funeralcare, Fife Police, Fife Fire & Rescue Service and representatives from a host of other local groups and organisations setting a sea of red poppies at the base of the memorial.
The Remembrance Sunday church service followed in Markinch Parish Church.  Commenting on the day, the minister the Revd. Alex Forsyth said, “I see Remembrance Sunday as a significant day in focusing the life of our nation. This day reminds us of our obligations, our values and commitment to justice and peace.”
During the church service special prayers were said for members of the Black Watch serving in Afghanistan.
