There are records of a church at Markinch dating from the time of MacBeth but the present church tower was built in the first half of the 12th century. Pieces of Norman decoration still survive. The interior now has a light, elegant Georgian character.
The visitor season has now drawn to a close so Markinch, St Drostan’s Church is no longer open on a daily basis for visitors. We have had many hundreds of pilgrims, walkers, visitors to the town and locals dropping in over the last few months and our guides have enjoyed meeting every one of them and getting the opportunity to show them around our unique building.
The graveyard will still be open daily and phone numbers will be provided should anyone wish to make arrangements to take a guided tour. We will open daily to visitors again around Easter next year.
The church will be open for worship every Sunday at 11.15am with other special services still to be announced.
Thank you to all our guides and to all the lovely people who have visited St Drostan’s Church.
